Dr Deepak Ranade
The Default Mode Network has largely been localised to the Prefrontal Medial Frontal Cortex, Angular gyrus and the Posterior Cingulate Cortex. In my study of 22 cases, the extent of the DMN is spread over a larger area involving the visual cortex, the somatosensory cortex which contribute in a significant manner to perceiving the sense of 'Self'. This presentation is part of my thesis work titled Role of Default Mode Network in genesis of consciousness and the Sense of Self. This research is also directed towards investigating the Hard Problem of Consciousness within the framework of Patanjali Yogasutra, that comments on the uniqueness of every subjective experience. The presentation will attempt to highlight the role of fMRI in expanding the role of the Default Mode Network to include 'Vritti' as mentioned in the Indian Philosophical and Knowledge Systems. This will prove to be a novel approach to addressing the Hard Problem of Consciousness.
Biosketch.
Dr. Deepak Ranade was a Professor of Neurosurgery in a University Hospital in Pune. He set up the Department in 2001 and since then the Department has become one of the most reputed with state-of- the-art technology and equipment. It is a recognized center for Neurosurgical Training and admits 3 students each year for the MCh Neurosurgery course. He has recently started his own centre of Spine Surgery.
Dr. Ranade has published more than 30 papers in International Journals.
He has trained in endoscopic discectomy in Arizona, USA. He has also trained in Seoul, South Korea and in Bern,Switzerland.
He has one of the largest series in the country for anterior approaches to the dorsolumbar spine.
He is an avid trekker having completed more than 14 high altitude treks in the Himalayas.
He is also a writer of repute and has contributed more than 120 articles in the Speaking Tree column of the Times of India, the national newspaper in the fields of Consciousness, Quantum Physics, Spirituality.
He is also a self taught Saxophonist and has given more than a dozen public performances.
Presently, he is pursuing a PhD in
'Role of the Default Mode Network in genesis of
Consciousness and the Sense of Self.'
He is married to Sonal, who is a corporate lawyer.
