Background: Conscious experience is dynamically influenced by sensory perception, autonomic regulation, and physiological state. Olfaction provides a direct pathway to limbic brain structures involved in emotion, memory, interoception, and stress regulation, making it an important model for consciousness research. This randomized pilot study investigated whether inhalation of Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum, Tulsi) essential oil alters autonomic function, as measured by heart rate variability (HRV), providing objective physiological evidence relevant to stress regulation and conscious experience. Participants in the Holy Basil group demonstrated improvements in HRV measures consistent with enhanced parasympathetic regulation and reduced physiological stress. These findings support further investigation of olfactory interventions as non-invasive models for studying physiological correlates of consciousness and stress regulation, while illustrating how traditional botanical medicine can inform contemporary neuroscience and psychophysiology.
