Emergent Time and Awareness Registration: Recalibrating the Maps of Time and Consciousness

Contemporary theories of consciousness have made substantial progress identifying neural correlates and informational architecture, yet the theories often treat time as an assumed background parameter rather than as an explanatory feature. This raises the possibility that persistent explanatory gaps may reflect an incomplete conceptualization of time itself. This work explores whether time and awareness may be co-emergent features of a lawful process of becoming, rather than separate domains linked only through correlation. Time is treated not as a passive parameter but as the lawful ordering and unfolding of energetic and informational change, potentially playing a governing role in conscious phenomena. Awareness is proposed as structured registration of meaningful change, with consciousness approached as accumulated and integrated awareness arising through organized registration events associated with functionally organized dynamics. Within this framework, time and awareness are co-emergent: time as the lawful ordering of becoming, awareness as participation in and registration of becoming. Ontological time as lawful becoming is distinguished from phenomenological time as the structured registration of becoming through accumulated and integrated awareness events. Awareness events are treated as conditional, arising only under organized integrative conditions rather than as ubiquitously realized. A central proposal is that progress may require returning to foundational units as a methodological step toward formalizing awareness-related dynamics. A candidate awareness-rate relation is introduced, A ̇=q_AR fηS with a proposed Awareness Registration Constant (q_AR) linking frequency, coherence, entropy, and informational structure. The constant is offered as a testable hypothesis rather than established law. The framework suggests that current models provide increasingly powerful maps of correlational structure while leaving unresolved the underlying territory linking time, matter, and awareness. It proposes potentially discriminable threshold relations among coherence, integration, entropy, and awareness registration, inviting empirical investigation into whether awareness may be formally quantifiable in a principled way rather than remain solely correlational.

About the speaker

Jeff Molner is an independent interdisciplinary researcher, author, and philosopher of science focused on the foundations of time, awareness, and consciousness. His work integrates physics, information theory, systems thinking, and philosophy to explore whether time and awareness may emerge as co-related features of lawful becoming. He is the author of Emergent Time and The Breakthrough and is currently developing the PanQualism framework and associated awareness formalism. Jeff brings decades of executive leadership experience across industry, government, and defense sectors, applying structured systems thinking to complex organizational and strategic problems.
