The Hollow Cylinder Phenomenon: A Neurophysiological Mapping of Somatosensory De-Gating and Bidirectional Pranic Currents in Supine Meditation

This paper investigates the neurophysiological and objective biophysical mechanisms underlying advanced somatic states during deep, recumbent meditation. We analyze a first-person phenomenological case study of a clinical neurophysiologist who experienced a deep state of sensory decoupling during supine Kundalini meditation. The subjective experience is characterized by a systemic somatic distortion wherein the body boundary registers as a hollow cylinder, accompanied by a rapid, bidirectional internal fluid or pneumatic current moving along the craniosacral axis, immediately followed by a profound hyper-acute auditory baseline suppression.Neuroanatomically, we model the "hollow tube" sensation as an advanced downregulation of proprioceptive and interoceptive baselines within the posterior insular cortex and primary somatosensory areas (S1). Due to prolonged musculoskeletal immobility in the supine position, baseline somatic friction drops to near-zero. Concurrently, the bidirectional "wind" or current sensation reflects the conscious synchronization of deep respiratory cycles with the craniosacral rhythm, creating an active hydrodynamic wave of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow along the spinal column that the de-afferented brain registers as an internal pneumatic current.Furthermore, the subsequent transition into absolute internal silence is analyzed as a profound upregulation of the Thalamic Reticular Nucleus (TRN). By actively gating out all environmental and internal neural background noise, the TRN reduces the brain’s auditory noise floor to absolute zero, causing hyper-sensitization of the primary auditory cortex. The preservation of conscious volition during this state—confirmed by voluntary ocular opening without breaking the hypnagogic depth—empirically validates the preservation of waking witness consciousness (Sakshi Chaitanya) independent of external sensory feedback matrices, offering a clear blueprint for top-down cognitive de-gating protocols.
