Subjective Experience and the limits of Computational Artificial Intelligence

**Abstract** Contemporary discussions of artificial intelligence frequently equate intelligence with consciousness by assuming that sufficiently advanced computational processes will eventually reproduce the human mind. This paper challenges that assumption by recovering a distinction central to the Platonic and classical philosophical traditions: the distinction between the intuitive and the discursive intellect. I argue that this distinction provides a more adequate framework for understanding both human consciousness and the limits of current artificial intelligence. The intuitive intellect is characterized by immediate apprehension, direct subjective awareness, and the unified perception of meaning. Rather than proceeding through sequential inference, it grasps intelligibility directly and serves as the basis for first principles that cannot themselves be derived through algorithmic reasoning. By contrast, the discursive intellect operates through temporal, linear, and analytical processes. It reasons syllogistically, constructs symbolic representations, and produces finite and partial models of reality. While discursive reasoning is indispensable for mathematics, logic, and scientific inquiry, it presupposes a prior intuitive awareness that apprehends concepts, meaning, and foundational logical principles such as the principle of non-contradiction. Discursive reason therefore depends upon, rather than replaces, intuitive intellect. Although this distinction has long been recognized within classical philosophy, it also finds suggestive parallels in contemporary neuroscience. Research increasingly associates holistic, context-sensitive, and meaning-oriented cognition with right-hemispheric processing, while the left hemisphere exhibits greater specialization for sequential, analytical, and discrete operations. Although these findings should not be interpreted as a strict localization of the two intellects, they are broadly consistent with the philosophical distinction between intuitive and discursive modes of cognition. This framework has important implications for evaluating artificial intelligence. Contemporary AI systems are designed to replicate aspects of discursive cognition through statistical inference, symbolic manipulation, pattern recognition, and algorithmic language generation. They do not, however, demonstrate immediate subjective awareness or direct apprehension of meaning. While computational theories may maintain that even these intuitive dimensions of cognition could eventually be reproduced algorithmically, there is currently no empirical or theoretical demonstration that immediate subjective experience or the apprehension of first principles is reducible to computational processes. Consequently, present AI systems should be understood as sophisticated simulations of discursive intelligence rather than as models of consciousness itself. By recovering the classical distinction between intuitive and discursive intellect, this paper argues that intelligence and consciousness should not be conflated. Recognizing this distinction provides a richer philosophical account of human cognition, clarifies the limitations of computational models of mind, and offers a more nuanced framework for understanding the relationship between artificial intelligence, consciousness, and the nature of human knowledge.
