Explaining Qualia and Wave Collapse with Tanmatron Field Theory Unifies Consciousness Science and Quantum Mechanics

The ancient subjective-objective divide remains the central bottleneck across contemporary physics, neurobiology, and the philosophy of mind. Mainstream physicalism relies on a bottom-up reductionism that treats consciousness as an accidental epiphenomenon, while alternative dualisms frequently succumb to the combination problem. This paper introduces Tanmatron Field Theory (TFT), a mathematically constrained, predictive dual-aspect field theory that expands the state-space of standard Quantum Field Theory (QFT) by coupling physical fields to a five-dimensional Tanmatric State Vector ΦTanmatric. TFT formalizes P.R. Sarkar’s cosmological laws from his philosophical treatise Ananda Sutram—specifically the Law of Attributional Capacity—into a constant scalar invariant conservation law. Grounded in the invariant physical property of frequency, the principle of Physical Phase-Locking establishes how subjective qualities are deterministically bound to physical wave dynamics. Rather than relying on statistical or probabilistic frameworks to identify sensory gateways, TFT defines biological Appropriative Points (A-points) as deterministic, spatial boundary conditions located precisely where classical neurophysiological signals reach absolute anatomical 'geographical dead ends' in the brain. At these terminal coordinates, the physical signal collapses, and its quantitative energy is conserved by transitioning into non-local wave vibrations on the mental plate (Citta), manifesting as qualitative experiences (qualia). By replacing bottom-up fragmentation with a top-down cosmic field interaction, the tanmatra framework provides systemic, definitive resolutions to thirteen foundational consciousness enigmas (1-13) and five quantum foundational enigmas (14-18) that have long stymied Western thought: 1) René Descartes’ original Mind-Body interaction problem, 2) David Chalmers' 'Hard Problem' of consciousness, 3) John Locke’s Inverted Spectrum, 4) John Searle’s Chinese Room, 5) Frank Jackson’s 'Mary’s Room' knowledge argument, 6) Thomas Nagel’s Bat's Perception anomaly, 7) the epistemological deadlock of Direct vs. Indirect Realism, 8) the neurophysiological Binding Problem, 9) the challenge of AI Consciousness and true artificial sentience, 10) Ned Block's Absent Qualia Enigma and philosophical zombies, 11) the Evolutionary Enigma of consciousness regarding functional redundancy, 12) the Boundary/Combination Problem of Panpsychism, 13) the enigma of Non-Local Awareness during flatline events like Near-Death Experiences and Deep Anesthesia, 14) the Double-Slit Experiment and wave-particle duality, 15) the Copenhagen Interpretation and the Measurement Problem, 16) The Schrödinger's Cat Enigma, 17) the mathematical exclusion of the Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI), and 18) the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) Paradox and Bell's Theorem (Quantum Entanglement & Non-Locality). By replacing ad-hoc wavefunction collapse with deterministic Topological Phase-Locking, TFT achieves a formal unification of Quantum Mechanics and perception architecture, framing complex wavefunctions as ontological dual-aspect states. Finally, the paper demonstrates the practical utility of TFT by proposing Eco-Phenomenological Virtual Reality (VR) frameworks, positioning the theory as a functional 'empathy engine' that can validate the universal, ethical tenets of Sarkar's Neohumanism. About the speaker

I have a B.Sc. in physics from MIT, an M.Sc. in physics from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University. I taught secondary school physics for two years in the US Peace Corps in Ghana, and worked at Bell Labs for three years as an applied psychologist in Whippany, NJ. I spent ten years teaching yoga philosophy and meditation as a traveling yogic monk in Europe with the Ananda Marga yoga movement, 5 years on an ecological agriculture support project in Poland, and 18 years as a physics instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College in California before retiring. I was interested in researching consciousness in the '70's at Stanford, but Stanford wasn't ready for this, so I did research in physiological psychology and then in human perception for my doctorate. I've given many physics presentations at regional and annual American Physical Society meetings on alternative physics ideas on the structure of electrons.
