Consciousness as Fundamental—Deriving the Physical from the Subjective The "Hard Problem" of consciousness—how subjective feeling arises from insentient matter—remains insoluble under the current materialist paradigm because the fundamental assumption is flawed. We propose a radical inversion of this causality: consciousness is not a product of the brain; rather, the brain and the physical universe are products of consciousness. Drawing on the My Big TOE framework, this presentation establishes consciousness as the fundamental, non-physical substrate of reality. Because consciousness possesses no physical attributes—no mass, charge, or spatial location—it cannot be measured by objective instruments designed to detect physical data. It is the observer, not the observed. We posit that what we perceive as the physical universe is a computed Virtual Reality (VR), a probabilistic data stream generated by a Larger Consciousness System to facilitate the evolution of quality (entropy reduction). In this model, we are not biological bodies that generate a mind; we are Individuated Units of Consciousness (IUOCs) that have "logged on" to a simulation to play the role of human avatars. The brain functions not as a generator of self, but as a constraint—a biological interface rule-set that limits data stream access to define the human experience. This theory resolves the inconsistencies of materialism by defining the physical world as a derivative information system. By accepting consciousness as fundamental, we can logically derive the properties of modern physics (such as quantum uncertainty and relativity) as artifacts of a discrete, finite-resource simulation, finally bridging the explanatory gap between objective science and subjective experience.
Thomas Campbell is a physicist and consciousness researcher who has dedicated over 50 years to unifying the worlds of objective science and subjective experience. Campbell completed his Masters in Physics at Purdue University and went on to the University of Virginia to pursue his PhD in experimental nuclear physics.
