This panel will explore the computability of consciousness and the question of whether artificial intelligence can ever be conscious. Bringing together perspectives from neuroscience, philosophy, physics, and computer science, the discussion will examine whether conscious experience can be fully explained by computation or whether it depends on processes that cannot be captured by algorithms. The panel will also consider how consciousness in AI could be defined, tested, or recognized. Giulio Tononi will contribute his perspective based on integrated information theory.
Giulio Tononi, MD, PhD, is a neuroscientist and psychiatrist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he directs the Wisconsin Institute for Sleep and Consciousness. He is best known for developing integrated information theory, an influential framework for understanding the nature and physical basis of consciousness.
