Background: Children who report apparent memories of a previous life have been documented across cultures for over five decades, comprising a substantial archive of investigated cases. While the mechanisms underlying these reports remain controversial — with interpretations ranging from psychosocial construction to anomalous cognition — the phenomenon exhibits a number of consistent, cross-culturally recurring features, including early onset of statements, emotional intensity, and a marked overrepresentation of sudden, unexpected, and violent deaths among identified previous persons (PPs) relative to general mortality patterns. Systematic quantitative analysis of these features has only recently become feasible with a comprehensive database of over 2,200 cases. Among reported features, intermission time — the interval between the PP's death and the child's birth — is an objectively measurable variable well suited to statistical analysis. Given the overrepresentation of unexpected deaths, we asked whether death characteristics relate not only to the occurrence of these cases but to their temporal dynamics: specifically, whether more unexpected deaths are associated with shorter intermission times. Methods: We analyzed 2,254 cases from the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies database, collected through systematic field investigations using standardized protocols. Death unexpectedness was rated on a 5-point scale. We examined the primary association across progressively stringent verification tiers: all cases, verified cases (where the PP was independently identified), and stringently verified cases (with independent confirmation of death circumstances and date precision). To evaluate whether the effect could be explained by conventional psychosocial mechanisms rather than reflecting verified events, we tested five potential sources of bias as moderators: verification quality, memory accuracy, family beliefs about reincarnation, family association between the child's family and the PP, and social status. Results: The dataset showed marked overrepresentation of sudden, unexpected deaths (72.2% unexpected at time of death) and highly skewed intermission times (median: 17 months; 57% under 24 months). Unexpected deaths were significantly associated with shorter intermission times across all cases (r = -.10, p = .001), with the effect strengthening in verified cases (r = -.13, p < .001) and most pronounced in stringently verified cases (r = -.16, p < .001). Objective death circumstances predicted intermission time more strongly than subjects' own death-related memories, suggesting the pattern reflects verified events rather than psychological construction. Critically, none of the five tested psychosocial factors — verification quality, memory accuracy, family beliefs, family association, or social status — moderated the effect in a manner consistent with a bias-based account. In several instances the association was, if anything, stronger under conditions where psychosocial explanations predict weaker effects (e.g., among families not holding reincarnation beliefs), opposite to the predicted direction. Conclusions: This first large-scale quantitative analysis reveals a robust association between death unexpectedness and shorter intermission times that strengthens with verification quality and is not readily accounted for by conventional psychosocial mechanisms. These findings warrant further investigation of temporal patterns in purported past-life memory cases, irrespective of one's theoretical framework for interpreting the phenomenon.
